Strong, Fast-Setting Industrial Glue

₹890.00

LOCTITE 480 is a one-component, black, rubber-toughened cyanoacrylate instant adhesive designed for bonding close-fitting parts. Its toughened formulation provides improved resistance to impact, peel and shear forces compared with conventional brittle instant adhesives.

The low-viscosity formulation allows LOCTITE 480 to flow easily into close-fitting joints and provides rapid fixture. Henkel specifies a fixture time of approximately 90 seconds on steel under its test conditions. The adhesive is suitable for bonding metals, plastics and elastomers, making it useful for demanding industrial assembly, maintenance and repair applications.

How LOCTITE 480 Works

LOCTITE 480 is an ethyl cyanoacrylate adhesive. It cures through reaction with moisture present on the bonding surfaces and in the surrounding environment. Because it is supplied as a single component, there is no need to measure or mix resin and hardener before application.

When a thin layer is applied between closely fitting surfaces, the adhesive rapidly polymerizes and develops a strong bond.

The curing speed depends on factors such as bond-line gap, humidity and surface condition. Thin bond lines generally cure faster, while larger gaps can slow curing. Henkel notes that an activator can be used where curing speed is too slow because of larger gaps, although this can affect ultimate bond strength and should be evaluated for the application.

Rubber-Toughened Formulation

A key advantage of LOCTITE 480 is its rubber-toughened formulation.

Traditional cyanoacrylate adhesives can be relatively brittle after curing. LOCTITE 480 is formulated to provide greater toughness, making it particularly suitable for assemblies exposed to impact, vibration and peel forces.

This makes it useful for applications where a conventional instant adhesive may not provide sufficient toughness.

Suitable Materials

LOCTITE 480 is designed for bonding:

Metals

Plastics

Elastomers

Rubber components

Close-fitting metal assemblies

Rubber-to-metal joints

Plastic-to-metal assemblies

Selected plastic-to-rubber applications

Actual bond performance depends on the specific substrate, surface preparation, joint design and service conditions. Henkel identifies metals, plastics and rubbers as the key substrates for LOCTITE 480.

Typical Applications

Metal Bonding

LOCTITE 480 can be used for bonding close-fitting metal components where rapid fixture and good impact resistance are required.

Rubber Bonding

Its rubber-toughened formulation makes it particularly useful for selected rubber bonding applications and rubber-to-metal assemblies.

Plastic Assembly

It can be used for bonding suitable plastic components where the materials and joint design are compatible with cyanoacrylate adhesives.

Industrial Maintenance

LOCTITE 480 can be used for maintenance and repair applications involving small components, close-fitting parts and assemblies exposed to mechanical impact or vibration.

Bond Strength

Henkel reports a typical shear strength of approximately 26 N/mm² (3,800 psi) on grit-blasted mild steel under specified test conditions. The actual strength achieved in a finished assembly can vary substantially depending on substrate, surface preparation, bond gap, joint geometry, curing conditions and loading.

Temperature Resistance

LOCTITE 480 has a listed operating temperature range of approximately:

-40°C to +100°C (-40°F to +212°F).

For applications involving continuous high temperature, thermal cycling or prolonged exposure to aggressive chemicals, compatibility should be verified against the current Henkel technical documentation.

Surface Preparation

Good surface preparation is important for achieving reliable cyanoacrylate bonding.

Recommended preparation generally includes:

Remove dirt, dust, oil and grease from the surfaces.

Ensure the mating surfaces are clean and dry.

Lightly abrade suitable surfaces where appropriate to improve mechanical adhesion.

Remove loose particles after abrasion.

Apply a small amount of LOCTITE 480 to one of the mating surfaces.

Assemble the parts immediately.

Apply sufficient pressure to hold the components together during initial curing.

Because LOCTITE 480 is intended for close-fitting parts, excessive adhesive thickness should generally be avoided.

Application Procedure

Clean the surfaces thoroughly.

Make sure the components fit closely together.

Apply a thin, even layer of LOCTITE 480.

Assemble the components immediately.

Hold or clamp the parts until adequate fixture is achieved.

Allow additional time for full strength development before applying significant loads.

Henkel specifies approximately 90 seconds fixture time on steel, but actual fixture time depends on substrate, bond gap, humidity and environmental conditions.

Advantages of LOCTITE 480

High Toughness

The rubber-toughened formulation helps provide improved resistance to impact and peel stresses.

Fast Fixture

With approximately 90 seconds fixture time on steel under specified conditions, LOCTITE 480 is suitable for applications where rapid assembly is important.

Easy One-Part Application

No mixing, weighing or separate hardener is required.

Low Viscosity

The low-viscosity formulation allows easy application to close-fitting components.

Broad Substrate Compatibility

It is designed for bonding metals, plastics and elastomers, providing versatility for industrial assembly and maintenance applications.

Limitations and Application Considerations

LOCTITE 480 is an instant cyanoacrylate adhesive, so it is generally best suited to relatively close-fitting joints rather than large gaps.

For larger gaps, curing can become slower. Henkel indicates that an activator can be considered where cure speed is inadequate because of a larger bond gap, but the effect on final bond strength should be evaluated.

For critical applications, always evaluate the actual combination of substrate, temperature, chemicals, joint design and mechanical loads before production use.

Packaging

Henkel's current India listing identifies LOCTITE 480, 20 g Bottle, with IDH/part number 135466. Other markets may offer additional package sizes, including larger bottles.

Product Summary
